This summer, we created Nantasket Community Green as a 501(c)(3) to raise money to support the creation and maintenance of a community green on the H.R.A. land. Our mission is to imagine, advocate for, and protect the H.R.A. land — its bay, its beach, its open horizon — as a living landscape woven into the rhythm of community life.
We advocate for responsible development that prioritizes green space and protects sweeping sunrise and sunset views through the thoughtful placement of community gathering places. The space should improve the community's quality of life and minimize impacts on infrastructure and utilities.
Each member of our board has a slightly different vision for what the space should look like, but we're all committed to working collaboratively with stakeholders to create an attainable shared purpose for the land.
Ultimately, our organization will not decide what amenities a community green includes. But we plan to work with stakeholders and advocate for sustainable, responsible creation of a shared space that becomes the gathering place for the Hull community.
We also believe that, with strategic, thoughtful planning, Nantasket Community Green will drive economic growth for Hull. Imagine Hull becoming a true destination for the region and being included among top Massachusetts destinations – like Chatham, Wellfleet, Plymouth, or Newburyport.
What if we can create a space to:
- Attract new residents and visitors – to watch sunrises and sunsets, relax with friends, and enjoy the Green’s amenities, such as summer concerts, picnics, and yoga.
- Drive growth for existing businesses through increased visitors and residents – and support businesses’ year-round survival.
- Attract new businesses when they see Hull has become a revived South Shore destination.
We believe all of this is possible with the creation of Nantasket Community Green. Adding this community space would not only spur economic growth, but also expand the town’s tax base.
The State of Massachusetts approved our paperwork to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on August 18, 2026. While we await confirmation of our exempt status from the IRS, we are confident it will approve our application. We may operate as such while we await the final determination letter.
We have set an initial goal of raising $4M by the end of 2028. And we believe we will need to raise significantly more than that into 2029 and beyond.
We know this is aggressive, but we believe the cost to create such a space with the proper green infrastructure, natural plantings, pathways for walkers and bikers, and amenities for the community – such as picnic areas, shade areas, places for food trucks, perhaps a natural amphitheater, etc. – will drive the cost to $20M or more.
Ideally, we want the entire 14-acre parcel to become Nantasket Community Green. But we are concerned the financial challenges of accomplishing that may be insurmountable. We will not know the true cost until the H.R.A. works with an outside organization to create the master plan and associated budget. Until we understand the cost, we believe it is too early to talk about selling off part of the land.
It is important to know that we also advocate that the cost to build and maintain this space not burden Hull taxpayers – especially in the wake of other significant capital expenditures, such as a new public safety building.
Finally, we are encouraged by recent developments at the H.R.A., including the board’s agreement that the majority of the land with ocean-to-bay views should become green space, the session with Karen Grey at Wildlands Trust at the end of August, and the vote last month to move forward with an RFP for someone to help the H.R.A. create a master plan.
We are also encouraged by the feedback and support we’ve had from the community so far. As we’ve met with individual H.R.A. board members, business leaders, and others in the community, the response has been overwhelmingly positive. Our values of sustainability, community, and collaboration resonate, and our ambition to raise millions of dollars to support the creation and maintenance of a Nantasket Community Green has been commended.
But we can’t do it alone. We hope members of the Hull community will help us by volunteering your time and expertise in areas where we need support. To learn more about us, our mission, and how you can volunteer, please visit nantasketgreen.org.
