While the State of Massachusetts approved our paperwork to become a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization on August 18, 2026, it can take several months for the IRS to approve us as an exempt organization.
According to the IRS, “exempt status is recognized back to the date the organization was created. Thus, while an application is pending, the organization can treat itself as exempt from federal income tax under section 501(c)(3). For example, it must file Form 990 (instead of an income tax return) while its application is pending. However, contributors to the organization do not have advance assurance of deductibility because the organization's exemption is pending. If the organization ultimately qualifies for exemption for the period in which the contribution is made, the contribution will be tax-deductible by the donor. Alternatively, if the organization ultimately does not qualify for exemption, then the contribution will not be tax-deductible.”
As of September 17, 2026, we are awaiting our exemption letter from the IRS.

We fully expect the IRS will grant us tax-exempt status, and that all donations will qualify for exemption. However, until we receive the determination letter, we can't guarantee donations will be tax-deductible. If we ultimately do not qualify for exemption, the contribution will not be tax-deductible.

The majority of the money will support the creation and maintenance of a community green. We will have a small amount of overhead to operate our nonprofit, including fundraising costs.
-
We expect to spend less than 10% of all funds raised on overhead and operating expenses. We are an all-volunteer group, and we hope to keep the amount in the single-digit percentage range.
